British garden birds are perhaps not as flamboyant as their north american cousins, yet they’re beautiful in their own right. I’ve found two calendars by Browntrout for you that showcase these small wonders (2012):

In January, mixed flocks of Blue Tits, Great Tits and Long-tailed Tits move around foraging for food, and may be accompanied by Nuthatches and Goldcrests. Winter thrushes, like Redwings and Fieldfares, are still about, and both Mistle Thrushes and Song Thrushes may be heard singing. In general the following Garden Birds are often spotted on the British Isles: Collard Dove, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, House Sparrow, Goldfinch, Wood Pigeon, Great Tit, Starling, Robin and of course the Blackbird.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll have a hard time picking the most beautiful of these calendars featuring pictures of wild flowers. Seriously – aren’t flowers just the best of nature? The loons (North America) or divers (UK/Ireland) are a group of aquatic birds found in many parts of North America and northern Eurasia (Europe, Asia and debatably Africa).

Loons on the Lake 2012 Wall Calendar Loons on the Lake by Wild Wings Artist’s Susan Bourdet, Rosemary Millette, Gene Stevens, Ron Van Gilder, and Persis Clayton Weirs exhibits the unmarred elegance of loons in their natural state.

The loon, the size of a large duck or small goose, resembles these birds in shape when swimming. Like ducks and geese but unlike coots (which are Rallidae) and grebes (Podicipedidae), the loon’s toes are connected by webbing. The bird may be confused with cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), not too distant relatives of divers and like them are heavy set birds whose bellies – unlike those of ducks and geese – are submerged when swimming. Flying loons resemble a plump goose with a seagull’s wings, relatively small in proportion to the bulky body. The bird holds its head pointing slightly upwards during swimming, but less so than cormorants do. In flight the head droops more than in similar aquatic birds.

Loons are excellent swimmers, using their feet to propel themselves above and under water while their wings provide assistance. Because their feet are far back on the body, loons are poorly adapted to moving on land, and usually avoid going onto land, except when nesting.
All loons are decent fliers, though the larger species have some difficulty taking off and thus must swim into the wind to pick up enough velocity to become airborne. Only the Red-throated Diver (G. stellata) can take off from land. Once airborne, their considerable stamina allows them to migrate long distances southwards in winter, where they reside in coastal waters. Loons can live as long as 30 years.

William Seltzer Rice Wall Calendars 2011, 2012

When he came to California at age 27, artist, author, craftsman, and teacher William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873-1963) traveled, sketched, and painted throughout the state to familiarize himself with its history, flora, and fauna. The arts and crafts movement was flowering and he distinguished himself as a teacher, painter and ultimately printmaker. After moving to San Francisco in 1910 he became even more prominent. The images on these calendars are woodblock prints which is the medium he finally specialized in. He designed, carved and printed the blocks himself. He saw it as a way of bringing original art to the people.

His art features images of nature, particularly trees and birds, still lifes, flowers and picturesque farm houses.

I love these cute baby wildlife wall calendars. Each features pictures of baby animals like the polar bear, red fox, North American bison, gray wolf, moose, cougar, black bear and more.

Baby animals delight us with their endearing behavior and playful antics…don’t you agree?
