Traditionally advent calendars contained nothing more behind the doors than pictures. Then it was candy, then it was toys.

Here are some candy advent calendars available this year that stick to the middle tradition: candy behind the doors – one for each day counting down to Christmas of course. Most of these are really chocolate advent calendars.

But first let me start with the one advent calendar containing sweets that were NOT chocolate: the Schmidt Cookie Advent Calendar. Instead it contains specialty Lebkuchen and biscuits. The boxes combine to make a sweet 24-piece puzzle.

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Planner 2012

I have found one Planner (so far) published for 2012 that feature THE fantasy movie of the year: Harry Potter. I loved the final movie and am so glad it’s finally out on DVD. This is more than two years ago, so I guess they’re figuring out people want these datebooks. There are also several Harry Potter calendars thankfully, as if to make up for the lack of planners.

In January, mixed flocks of Blue Tits, Great Tits and Long-tailed Tits move around foraging for food, and may be accompanied by Nuthatches and Goldcrests. Winter thrushes, like Redwings and Fieldfares, are still about, and both Mistle Thrushes and Song Thrushes may be heard singing. In general the following Garden Birds are often spotted on the British Isles: Collard Dove, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, House Sparrow, Goldfinch, Wood Pigeon, Great Tit, Starling, Robin and of course the Blackbird.

Surrealist Art Posters Calendars 2012

Joan Miro and Salvador Dali are two of the artists from the surrealist movement whose work has survived till today. Salvador Dali, with his flamboyant lifestyle, is best remembered. The word ‘surrealism’ brings to mind his dreamy half realistic work with dripping clocks and elephants on stilts. Joan Miro’s work was more abstract in nature, using nearly primary colors and shapes like lines and circles. Yet both were artists in the surrealism movement of the 1920′s. Gathered on this page you will find poster calendars featuring the work of a variety of Surrealist artists.

Poster calendars are distinguished by their large posters and the lack of room to write down much. Still, each month you will find the dates of that month included. The pages in these large-format calendars are stunning enough to be framed and mounted on their own. The first two are published by teNeues and include multi-lingual introduction and a European linear calendarium. The exception is the Frida Kahlo de Rivera poster calendar. It’s published by the equally famous publisher Taschen.

Miro 2011 Poster Calendar

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954; born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán. Perhaps best known for her self-portraits, Kahlo’s work is remembered for its “pain and passion”, and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.

Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition figure prominently in her work, which has sometimes been characterized as Naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as “surrealist”, and in 1938 one surrealist described Kahlo herself as a “ribbon around a bomb”.

Kahlo had a stormy but passionate marriage with the prominent Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many of which stemmed from a traffic accident in her teenage years. These issues are reflected in her works, more than half of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”

Surrealism is defined as using the real (aka realism) and turning it on it’s head into something that is NOT realistic at all. The difference with abstract art is that in surrealism we (generally) do see something we can recognize from the real world. With this definition it’s a bit puzzling that Frieda Kahlo’s work is considered ‘surrealistic’, but it is – we can’t argue with the experts, can we?

M.C. Escher art calendars 2012

Escher combined detailed artistry, subtle humor, and rigorous attention to the physical behavior of imaginary substances, into graphic worlds whose absurd, impeccably principled physics and rogue geometries mock our perception of space. The result is admired by math enthusiasts as well as artists and the public. I think it’s the symmetry in his work that makes it so popular with ‘ordinary’ people: Escher’s work makes sense to us even as it doesn’t.

Maurits Cornelis Escher (17 June 1898 – 27 March 1972), usually referred to as M.C. Escher, was a Dutch-Frisian graphic artist. He is known for his often mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. These feature impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, architecture, and tessellations.

Some people would classify his art as surrealism, but to use any label at all is to minimize the uniqueness of his visual style.

For previous years I’ve found several beautiful planners for you with baby animal photographs. All of them feature pictures of animals or wildlife. It has a year full of cute and cuddly baby wildlife photographs, including wolves, foxes, bear, deer, bobcat, and more.
